3. When and where will the games and practices begin?
Games are normally played on Saturdays starting in early January. All games are played at Keller ISD schools. Grades 3 - 6 will have an end of season tournament that usually begins on the first Wednesday of March and runs through that Saturday. All tournaments are single elimination games. Each coach is provided one KYA sponsored practice per week at a Keller ISD school, for 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on facility availability. Your child's coach will communicate practice location, day, and time, in mid December. Practices at Keller ISD facilities will begin the first week of January, however your coach may begin limited practices as soon as the teams are selected. These practices can be held at any non-Keller ISD location.
4. Is there a minimum playing time for the kids?
Yes, by rule, each child is to play a minimum of two, complete, uninterrupted quarters in each game. Certain events may reduce or eliminate minimum playing time requirements, such as arriving late to games and/or missing multiple practices. Also, a lack of volunteer coaches may necessitate more players per team and will impact each player's playing time. Get involved! Volunteer to coach, we need you!
5. What are the different age or grade groups?
Boys 1st grade
Boys 2nd grade
Girls 1st and 2nd grades
Boys 3rd grade
Girls 3rd and 4th grades
Boys 4th grade

These groupings are subject to change depending on the number of registered players. KYA Basketball is only structured to support grades 1 through 6 and no exceptions can be made.
6. What size basketball do we need and are they provided?
All girls divisions use 28.5" balls. Boys 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades also use 28.5" balls. Boys grades 4th, 5th, and 6th use 29.5" balls. Game balls will be available on game day at each game location. Basketballs are not provided to players or teams. It is highly recommended that each player bring their own basketball, with name clearly marked, to each practice and game (for warm-ups before the game and at halftime).
7. Are uniforms provided and when will we get them?
Each player will receive one reversible jersey and are usually distributed by the coach at the practice before the first game. Coaches select the team name and colors.
8. What happens if two teams have the same color jerseys?
All jerseys are reversible, with one side being white/light colors, the other side the darker color. The home team is always white/light color, visitor team is always the dark color. The home team only has to reverse to the white/light color if the two teams are wearing the same or similar colors.
9. Are there established rules?
Yes. Your coach can provide a rulebook, and you can also view the rules online under the Recreation Basketball link.
10. How are the teams put together?
The KYA Basketball Commissioner and Vice Commissioners put 1st and 2nd grade teams together. Every attempt is made to fulfill parent's requests as this grade level, however we cannot guarantee any request. Absent any requests, we try to place players on teams with other players from the same school or schools in close geographical proximity. Grades 3 - 6 are formed through an open draft. There will be a coaches look session prior to the draft to assist the coaches in the selection process. Players that do not attend the coaches look sessions will be selected at the draft via a blind draw. All children will be selected for a team.
